El Salvador Church in Nerja

Nerja's El Salvador Church is a popular choice for a catholic wedding

To be eligible for a Catholic Church wedding here in Spain, at least one of you must be Catholic and you should not have been previously married. Nerja Bride will guide you through the whole process, from arranging the date with the Church to the final registration of your paperwork after the service. Church weddings, unlike ceremonies officiated by a celebrant, are legally binding and recognised internationally. We can also help ensure that your Church wedding ceremony can be conducted in English. Please contact Nerja Bride for more information.

Getting Married in a Catholic Church in Spain as a Non-Spanish Resident

Getting married in a Catholic church in Spain is a beautiful and meaningful choice for many international couples. With its historic churches, stunning coastal locations and deep religious traditions, Spain is a popular destination for Catholic weddings — even for couples who are not Spanish residents.

Yes, non-Spanish residents can legally get married in a Catholic church in Spain, but the process involves specific documentation and church approvals. Couples must complete a Catholic marriage file (expediente matrimonial), which is normally prepared in their home parish and then transferred to the chosen church in Spain. This includes baptism certificates, confirmation certificates, proof of freedom to marry, and permission from the local bishop.

The Catholic Church in Spain follows Canon Law, not civil law, meaning the religious paperwork is essential. In many cases, couples will also need to register the marriage civilly, depending on nationality and legal requirements. Timelines are important, as church approvals can take several months, especially for destination weddings.

Working with an experienced Spanish wedding planner is strongly recommended. A specialist planner can liaise with the parish priest, the diocese, translators and local authorities, ensuring all documents are correct, translated where required, and submitted on time.

At Nerja Bride, we guide non-Spanish couples through every step of planning a Catholic wedding in Spain, from church bookings and legal requirements to full wedding day coordination. Our local expertise ensures a smooth, stress-free process — allowing you to focus on your faith, your commitment and your celebration.
