A Brief History of Nerja
Nerja is a picturesque town on the Costa del Sol, in the province of Málaga, Andalucía, Spain. It has roots dating back thousands of years, with evidence of prehistoric human settlements in the area. The most famous remnants are the Cueva de Nerja (Nerja Caves), which contain prehistoric cave paintings estimated to be over 42,000 years old.
During Roman times, Nerja was part of the region known as Bastetania, and it later fell under Moorish rule from the 8th to the 15th centuries. The influence of the Moors is still visible in the town’s architecture and narrow winding streets. After the Reconquista, Nerja developed into a small fishing village, maintaining its authentic Andalusian charm, which persists to this day.
